the orange black

This small bowl was shaped from cherry wood, a material that only grows richer with time. Its form is one I return to often—a continuous curve with a gentle lift, the lip folding slightly inward with a consistant thickness—giving it a sense of balance and refinement.

While still on the lathe, the surface was textured, then ebonized with layers of India ink. I removed selective portions of the blackness with even more texturing, which allows the warm, reddish-orange hues of the cherry to emerge through the deepened grain. A final coat of walnut oil enhanced its appearance, and over time, the wood will continue to darken and develop even greater depth. A touch of wax adds both protection and a soft, natural luster.

Dimensions (approx.):
Ø: 4-3/4” (12 cm)
H: 4-1/4” (10.5 cm)
