This pear-shaped vessel originated from a once-majestic elm that stood just a few blocks from my home. Unfortunately, the tree had to be removed due to disease, but a small part of it lives on here.

Turned thick while the wood was still full of moisture, the piece was left to dry naturally, allowing the wood to warp slightly. Once dry, it was returned to the lathe to refine its form into its final, concentric shape.

The surface was textured to allow the grain shapes to gain prominance, then both exterior and interior were ebonized with layers of India ink. A hand-buffed application of wax adds both protection and a soft, natural luster.

The base was left natural, adorned with several small concentric beads—an happy detail revealed when the piece is turned over.

For those who appreciate a sense of place, these GPS coordinates mark where this mighty elm once stood:
45°31'57.7"N 122°42'02.1"W

Dimensions:
Ø: 4-3/4“ (12 cm)
H: 5“ (12.5 cm)
