panama lignum

This incredibly dense piece of Lignum Vitae, one of the hardest and densest woods in the world. It came from a railroad tie that was used to help build the Panama Canal back in the early 1900s. It was submerged underwater for over a hundred years before it was dredged from the lake and reclaimed.

Definitely the oldest piece of wood I’ve ever turned. And probably the one with the most interesting history.

Dimensions (approx.):
Ø: 5-1/4” (13.5 cm)
H: 5” (12.5 cm)
